design: make a cheap coloring table

kids coloring tables warm my heart...

the price tag does not.
damn you pottery barn for cute furniture but hefty price tags!

'stone hedge' aka our dining room table is the only table we have in our home
we use it for everything, so why not coloring as well?

the underside of our table was ideal to be able to implement this scheme
so i got a roll of paper at ikea for $5
and had an adjustable tension rod from our old apartment
i slid the rod through the paper and hooked the rod underneath the table
i tightened it to make sure it was secure and then tried it out!
i am really happy with the results
if i wanted to make it more permanent, i would have used a curtain rod and drilled brackets to the inside of the table
but since kids grow out of things so quickly i can easily take this apart with no damage to the table
overall, i got the same great effect... for $5!
what do you think?

  1. I love this idea! My toddler would not necessarily keep the crayons on the paper and would "drift" onto the table, but when she gets older I'm going to give this a try. Thanks!

  2. No Problem! I keep the crayons in a large jar I found at Goodwill. This keeps the crayons in one spot and acts as a paper weight for the paper to keep it in place!

  3. Your table and chairs are gorgeous. The end result you've created is, like, 1,000 times better than the PB table anyway. Hooray for ingenuity!
