makeover: front porch- phase 1

our front porch is in need of major TLC
it lacks character and does not welcome guests into our home
it needs work... PRONTO!
so instead of doing a big reveal, i am going to tackle this project in phases
the things i am looking to do:
repair wooden frame
paint the front door a complimentary color
add some numbers
incorporate some greenery
i picked up these flowers from my trip to home depot when i made my succulent garden
and already i think the porch looks more inviting!
for the spring time they are just right... bright and bold!
but i could also imagine a tall topiary or an evergreen during the colder months...
this little nook will probably be subject to change
stay tuned for more front porch makeover!

baking: caramel corn

one thing i love about being a stay at home mom is being able to surprise my family with 'little- nothings' as i like to call it... and most of the time it is food related
craig scores big when i make kebobs, aspen loves melon puree and kyler loves popcorn but the kid also has a major sweet tooth
so i decided to make him an afternoon snack just up his alley:
caramel corn!
start by popping two bags of your favorite popcorn
i used the walmart brand in a light butter version
you are only going to need 5 pantry staples which include brown sugar, butter, baking soda, corn syrup and salt
now i halved the caramel sauce because i knew the first thing craig was going to ask me was, "how much butter is in this?"
so if you want extra creamy caramel corn double this recipe
take 1/2 cup a butter, 1 cup of brown sugar, one-fourth a cup of corn syrup and half a teaspoon of salt
bring to a boil for 5 minutes
remove from heat and add 1/2 teaspoon of salt
mix well!
pout this over your popcorn in a large bowl
mix to coat
{ remember this is the part where having more caramel sauce maybe in your best interest! }
place on a baking sheet and bake at 200 degrees for one hour
mix the popcorn every 15 minutes or so
let cool on wax paper
bask in its glory...
and eat a cup for yourself!

drinking: strawberry lemonade

this is a quick and easy drink to make
it even makes you look fancier than you really are!
which is why i like it so much
i use this ole' goodie for entertaining especially for those upcoming summer-like days!
take a handful of frozen strawberries and let them defrost halfway
add to your favorite pitcher
pour in your favorite lemonade and enjoy!

gardening: succulent garden

i really like flowers
fresh cut are typically my favorite
since they die and then you chuck them

keeping plants alive are not my thing
i tell craig that kids are my thing... plants are not
but my heart still aches for a little bit of green
so i decided to make a no fuss succulent garden for our living room
our side table was lacking... everything
i had some glamorific candlesticks
but obviously nothing else
so i took my green thumb to home depot
and came back with all the components to make this awesome little arrangement
one of the keys to making this look professional is varying the textures of the succulents
the sharp spikes of this one go well with the smooth round lobes of the one behind it
{ please don't make me explain more... even that was so forced }
you also want to arrange them so the height of the plants are complimentary but still eye pleasing
i also added some rocks from our front yard for some contrast
the table still needs some finishing touches but the garden does not...its a great addition to our home!
what other kind of gardening projects am i missing out on?

beauty: do it yourself curling wand

when i get ready in the morning, i want my hair done... but not too done.
no barrel curls, updos or anything too magnificent
just some texture to my otherwise boring straight hair
i have been wanting a curling wand but couldn't justify the price of them
so i decided to transform my normal curling iron into a tool i would use on a daily basis
instead of just those 'special occasions'
this is a 1" curling iron i bought from sally's so i could do my hair for our wedding
not bad for an amateur :)
anyways... first start by removing the little kick stand on your iron
find the screws that attach the handle to the barrel...
and take those off too!
then lastly the hinge and spring will be left... which you take off. you don't want any snags!
whatever the model of your curling iron, you are basically gutting it down just to the barrel
now i can get that messy undone look!
but i am keeping the spare pieces in a drawer just in case i need wedding hair again
{ juuuuust kidding! }

cooking: sausage potato tortillas

no tutorial on this one since it's soooo EASY!
these babies are sausage and potato tortillas
the recipe i was inspired from was kinda crappy so i made some delicious add ons
decase some sausage and sautee in a pan with some medium diced potatoes
once cooked add into a tortilla with some fresh cut peppers, black beans, sour cream and some cilantro!
shove your face full of this happy tortilla and call it a weeknight dinner!

decorating: bathroom essentials

one of the nice things about our house is having my own sink
i now have jurisdiction of some counter space and a little shelf that holds all my bathroom essentials
personal and true to my habits
they include:
a glass: this is a constant reminder that i need to drink more water and often prompts me to chug a huge glass of H2O before bed
hair ties: easily accessible for those daily pony tails and face washing but stored in a vintage candle holder so i feel more fancy!
a ring holder: this is a beloved thrift store find that holds my favorite pair of earrings and my engagement ring. my hands are too swollen to wear it but i still like looking at it. probably not a wise choice to keep it by the sink buuuuut so far no disasters. knock on wood! good thing i know how to take apart a sink in case the inevitable occurs.
toothbrush heads: this reminds me of the episode of Sex in the City where SJP's source of happiness is sharing an electric toothbrush with Mr. Big... though i am not obsessed with sharing a toothbrush i am obsessed with clean teeth.
framed reminder: i made a vow to myself to have monthly resolutions but obviously that was a major fail. so i am taking my time making sure i master each thing i would like to accomplish before trying to move onto the next. cursing less has been the hardest but each day i wake up with the reminder to make those changes
what are some of your bathroom go-to's?
