how to: wire a lighting fixture

i have been wanting to paint over the builder beige in our house
i love white walls... they are clean, refreshing and modern
i wanted to start with the boys room and incorporate colors through bold patterns
but i wanted to replace their ceiling fixture
it's a good ole' boob light

functional but not stylish
wiring a light is one of the easiest home repairs to do!

start by taking the boob off
{ that would be the glass part }

unscrew the base from the wiring junction

once you get the base off it will reveal all the wiring
it consists of a black wire, a white wire and a copper one which is the ground wire
unscrew the caps which connect the wires from your fixture and from the ceiling

this will leave the wires exposed to hook up your new fixture to!

so depending on what kind of fixture you use will depend on these next steps
but basically you are going to re-install the base of a fixture and wire together all the same color coded wires

ground to ground, black to black, white to white - using the caps you twist the wires together

follow the directions to your light to finish hanging fixture
i always wire the fixture and then roughly hang it to make sure the wiring is correct and that the lights on it work
you may need two people to test it out- one to hold the light, one to flip the switch
luckily this fixture was super lightweight

and there you have it
all wired and ready to go!

so many more boobs to replace... but at least this one is looking good!
